Throughout the next few modules, you will be completing the Common Beliefs Survey from the Teaching Tolerance Project of the Southern Poverty Law Center. This week’s survey items relate to race, ethnicity, culture, and learning. After completing each question in the survey, you will read over background information pertaining to each belief as well as answer questions that interest you most. This exercise is an opportunity for deep, honest, and personal reflection pertaining to your beliefs and how they play a role in your teaching practice.
Review the following Learning Resources:
Rate items 1, 3, 4, 9, 12, and 13 in the Teaching Tolerance: Common Beliefs Survey: Rate items 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, and 11 from the Teaching Tolerance: Common Beliefs Survey in the Rating column of the Reflecting on Diversity Activity Log.
Record your initial thoughts for each item in the Why I Feel This Way column of the Reflecting on Diversity Activity Log:
Review the background information for each item in the Teaching Tolerance: Common Beliefs document and record in the Activity Results column of the activity log whether your opinion on each changed after reading the background information.
Select one question from the Questions to Consider section in the Teaching Tolerance: Common Beliefs document to answer for each item.
Compose a cohesive personal reflection related to your selected questions that includes citations from the peer-reviewed resources and specific reference to your own classroom and/or an underserved population in your school setting. Record your answer in the Personal Reflection column of the activity log.
