Emotional intelligence (EI) plays a critical role and will significantly affect my ability to lead my people as a leader. According to Colquitt, EI covers self-awareness, other awareness, emotion regulation, and use of emotions. (2021). It is a full spectrum that one needs to have when dealing with others around them, especially as a leader. As a leader, I must know my own emotions and which events or issues will trigger my emotions to the extreme. Thus, I will be able to acknowledge my emotional weaknesses and find a way to calm myself. I will eventually lose my employees if I cannot control my temper or emotion. The employees often look up to the leader to see how they manage or handle themselves under stressful situations. If I get upset and start venting or complaining in front of them, I will also lose my creditability, competence, and ability to lead them.
Moreover, recognizing others’ emotions is vital because I can truly show them my sincere empathy for them, as mentioned in the video. (Goleman, n.d.). I cannot be a leader if there is no follower. No one will follow if I continuously disregard their feeling or emotion because they can perceive me as if I do not care for them. I was once in the employee position and have been very disappointed in the leaders who completely missed my emotions and feeling. They put the mission first and did not care much about the employee’s sense. Therefore, the employees begin not to care and do not perform as well. These are the social skills that Goleman discussed in his video. (n.d.). I cannot be an effective leader if I do not recognize my employees’ emotions and know how to tackle their needs.
