Prompt: One of the chief features of the Viking Age is the interconnectivity of the Northern world, a vast geographic expanse stretching from Greenland in the west to the eastern Baltic and beyond. This was a broad zone in which multiple cultures came into contact. Some connections between individuals and groups were hostile and others were of mutual benefit. This world is displayed to you in Egil’s Saga (a text set in the 9th and 10th centuries, but composed in the 13th century).
Using this text, explain two central themes that you observe in the narrative that helped to structure this interconnected world. You may select themes that you notice independently, but some ideas include: the importance of honor and a sense of justice to resolving disputes; the struggle between kings and common people; the influence of family over the individual; or conceptions of masculinity/femininity. DETAILED ANALYSIS REFLECTING AND GETTING IN DEPT WITH THE TEXT! PRIMARY SOURCES AND NO EVIDENCE TAKEN FROM TEXT WITHOUT DETAILED ANALYSIS!
Whichever two themes you decide to include, you must cite evidence from the saga to support your argument. Outside sources are permitted, but not required.
Standards: 3-5 page Word Document; double spaced; Times New Roman; 11 or 12 pt. font; 1-inch margins; no spaces between paragraphs; Chicago Manual Style Footnotes (do not use in-text citations). A cover page is not required for this assignment.
Grade: The exercise will be evaluated based on the strength of your argument, the use of the primary source texts to support that argument, and the appropriate execution of the standards listed above.
