For this assignment you will once again use the reading assignments as a springboard for your inspiration. Chose from one of the three writing prompts:
1. After having read “Shame,” the narrator provides a list of examples that magnify his shame. In similar fashion, describe a time you felt shame and provide specific examples of that compounded that shame.
2. “Black Men in Public Spaces” was originally published in 1986. More than 30 years later, our society continues to grapple with stereotypes. In an essay, provide specific examples of when you fell victim to a stereotype. Include a vivid recollection of your feelings and how your responded.
3. In “American Psycho,” Bateman walks us through his morning routine, though in describing his apartment to the reader, he reveals so much more. Think about how brands influence you. What do brand names signify to you? How much of your personal identity is made up of brands? In an essay identify brands that are important to you. Use these examples to reveal who you are. Explain what these brands say about you.
Regardless of your topic choice, convey the emotional content of your topic or moral of your illustration essay by using concrete language to show your attitude rather than using abstract language to tell what your attitude is. Your essay should be long enough to develop your ideas completely (Note: An essay is at least five paragraphs long. Most good essays are longer. One paragraph is not an essay. Don’t limit yourself to five paragraphs as this will leave you shy of the length your paper should be – 750 words minimum)
Important General Information: In each assignment you must submit one paper with 3 elements: brainstorming, rough draft (with revision requirements) and final draft. Brainstorming is often overlooked in the writing process. Most people want to just sit down and start writing. I am challenging you to forego that mentality. You have to brainstorm. You have to show a rough draft with revision markings. You have to turn in a final paper.
The Expected Writing Process
Brainstorming list: List all the concrete details you can think of relating to the topic. Include sense words–sights, sounds, smells, physical sensations, tastes, textures–although you may not be able to incorporate all five senses in your final essay.
Drafting: Write a draft introduction, body, and conclusion, based on the brainstorming activities.
Revising: Complete the “Revision Requirements” page following this page in the module.
Check spelling, punctuation, and diction.
Check verb consistency.
Check sentence structure.
Put your name, the Instructor’s name, the class, and the date in the upper left-hand corner of the essay.
Title the essay.
Submit Your Work: Submit your work to the Canvas Narration Essay Assignment. It must be submitted in the following order: Your final version of your essay, followed by the rough draft, and then followed by your brainstorming.
As you revise, make a concerted effort to address the items listed. It will have a positive effect on your writing. Highlight the first word of each sentence. Analyze for repetition.
Avoid weak structures such as “It is,” “It was,” “There are,” or “There were.” They are not descriptive in nature. Cross through these in your rough draft (e.g. It was). Remove them for the final copy.

Evaluate verb word choice. Do the verbs help to add color to your essay or are they merely a device used strictly for sentence construction? Highlight your verbs in green.
Avoid “be” verbs plus –ing verbs. For example: is running. Use ran. Cross these out (e.g. is running)
Eliminate “I think” or “I believe.” If you are writing the paper, then I already know this. Cross these out (e.g. It was)
Watch out for shifts in person. Do NOT use second person (you). Exception: You may use second person for the process essay. Highlight these in red.
For example: More candles and roses were on a table and on the stairs that led to the beach. An ocean was just few steps away. You could feel the warmth of the water, especially on a cool night. (Watch the shift in point of view)
Revise to read: The warmth of the water cascaded over my feet as we walked along the beach on cool nights.
Do NOT begin sentences with coordinating conjunctions. They are for joining elements within sentences and are not to be use to begin sentences. (And, but, or). Cross these out (e.g. But)
Do NOT end sentences with prepositions.
Do NOT use the word “got” or any of the forms of “got.” Highlight these in blue.
Original: I got to work and I was still tired from the stress and joy associated with the birth of our little girl.
Revised: After my sleepless night, I dragged myself to work, still tired from the stress and joy associated with the birth of our little girl.
If you use numbers in your essay be sure to brush up on the rules for the correct way to use them.
Do NOT do this: In this paper I will explain my experience of joining a fraternity. Cross these out. (In this paper…)
Revised: Through my experiences of belonging to a fraternity, I learned about true friendship.
Do NOT do this: In conclusion, … Cross it out. (In conclusion)
Work in sensory details. Don’t write “The meal smelled good.” Write – “The aroma of freshly prepared fajitas wafted through the ocean air.” Note how much more colorful this is than the original.
Watch for run-ons, comma splices and sentence fragments.
Do NOT use semicolons unless you know how to use them!
Be sure to write in past tense (remain consistent in verb tense throughout the paper).
Limit papers to two pages, 12pt type, double-spaced!
