In this paper, you will present the information you have found through your research and relate this information to Ackerman’s book.
Here are possible choices of topics for your research/analytical paper.
Both assignment topics are based on Diane Ackerman’s book The Zookeeper’s Wife.
You can choose one of the topics listed below:
Research the history of the Righteous Among the Nations award, including the information on how it was established and to whom it is awarded, as well as the number of recipients so far and the countries of their origin. Select one recipient from one of the European countries occupied by the Nazis during WWII, and find detailed information about them (who they were, whom they rescued, and under what circumstances). Choose a recipient who, like the Żabinskis, received the award for hiding Jews. Ponder any similarities and/or differences between their story and the one recounted in Ackerman’s book. Of course, to do that, you will need to learn some specific information about the situation of Jews in the country your chosen recipient lived in.
Research the basic tenets of the Nazi ideology and relate your findings to Ackerman’s book, explaining, for instance, how the information you acquired may help one better understand some people and facts described in the book. You will need to learn more about the Nazis’ worldview and then discuss how Ackerman presents this worldview in action in her book.
Aim for at least two sources, not counting Ackerman’s book; the paper will have to be minimum five pages long.
Use the MLA system of documentation.
As you can see, this is not typical research paper, in which you just present the information you obtained from various sources. In this paper, you will have to apply what you found out through your research to Ackerman’s text.
Your research does not have to be very extensive: you are required to use minimum two sources apart from Ackerman’s book.
Some suggestions on how to organize your paper:
If you choose option # 1, you should first present the information about the Righteous Among the Nations award, then, briefly, introduce the rescuer that you want to compare with the Żabinskis (who also received it) and in the rest of your paper (and that should be its longest part) compare the two rescue efforts. This means that most of your paper should be structured like a comparison/contrast essay.
To write a meaningful comparison of the two rescue efforts, you must choose someone who received the Righteous Among the Nations Award for hiding Jews, like the Żabinskis, not for helping Jews in any other way, for otherwise the two rescue efforts would hardly be comparable.
Also, make sure that you choose a rescuer from another European country that was occupied by the Nazis during WW II; you could, for instance, choose someone from France or from Denmark.
Moreover, you need to decide on some reasonable criteria of comparison. To suggest a few, you could, for instance, consider the risk involved (that is, the punishment that the rescuers would face if they were caught; the punishment was not the same in all the countries occupied by the Nazis), the specific difficulties that the rescuers had to deal with every day, (having to do with feeding the hiding Jews, for instance), the character of the place where the Jews were hidden (was it an apartment, for instance, where one would have a lot of neighbors?), the attitude of the population toward Jews, the overall number of Jews in the rescuers’ country (which would, of course, influence the population’s attitude toward them), the amount of help the rescuers received, if any, from other individuals or from the underground organizations, the number of Jews they rescued, and the duration of the rescue effort.
Your thesis in this paper, placed in the introductory paragraph, should concisely compare the two rescue efforts.
All the information about the Zabinskis’ should be based on Ackerman’s book, from which you should quote to support your points.
If you choose the second option, you should first introduce the main ideas that the Nazis believed in, and then explain how these ideas were carried out in real life, based on Ackerman’s book, Concentrate on the actions (and/or beliefs) of the Nazis whom Ackerman describes in some details, analyze the Nazi policies implemented in Poland, their treatment of Jews and Poles. As for the organization of a paper responding to the second option, you should first devote one or more paragraphs to the presentation of Nazi ideology, and then, in the rest of your paper, you could focus each paragraph on one of the Nazi beliefs, discussing how Ackerman shows this belief in action in her book. and using quotations to support your points. As you can see, this paper will require a bit more analysis of Ackerman’s text. Your sources should help you understand better what the actions and policies of the Nazis stemmed from.
Your thesis in the paper responding to this option should briefly explain which people and events described in Ackerman’s book best illustrate the Nazi ideas in action.
Please remember that, whichever option you choose, the main bulk of your paper should involve working with the text of Ackerman’s book. If you choose the first option, you will be comparing the situation of a specific rescuer to that of the Żabinskis using the details from the text, and if you choose the second one, you will be analyzing fragments of Ackerman’s book to explain how they illustrate some of the Nazi ideas in action.
Please aim at using at least 15 quotations from all of your sources in this paper. Choose your quotations carefully, making sure that they illustrate your point well. Remember to integrate the quotations with your own sentences. Also, remember to use parenthetical citations after the quotes. If the online source you use has no page numbers, use just the author’s name. If there is no author, use just the title of the source. One more thing: if you are not using the exact quotation but are still including a lot of specific information from your source, you must use a citation too.
