– Instruction: A typewritten personal statement indicating the basis of your interest in graduate study and your career objectives. Include discussion of any research experience you have had. Also mention here which faculty members you would be most interested in working with and why. A separate personal statement on diversity, equity, and inclusion in science is optional. Specifications include Times New Roman, 12 point font, 0.5 inch margins, one page single-sided.
– File attached is not formatted per instruction (font) – please match the format/page layout and leave as little white space as possible of 1 page limit
– More talking points to fill in the white space are below:
1) I have been in the upper limb rehabilitation industry for a decade now and this gave me plenty of opportunity to define user needs and collect feedback from patients and practitioners.
I have a clear idea of what is lacking in clinical settings that future research can help.
2) I have experience in translational research – multiple NIH funded projects I was involved in led to a product launch.
This includes continuation of my master’s thesis which is now integrated to IBT’s pattern recognition system.
3) I started my BME Master’s project with Stroke rehabilitation then switched to upper limb prosthesis rehabilitation as I found what I am passionate about.
I have finished my preliminary research, experiment, analysis, and thesis writing all within a year and have graduated from a competitive Master’s program.
Moreover, I already met the credit requirements besides seminar/ethics courses, which will enable me to focus on an independent research project.
4) I am proactive, organized, and responsible. Working in a small company, I learned to figure out what I need to do instead of relying on others to tell me what to do.
I also have experience putting logistics together for a grant proposal with up to 7 collaborators (Haptix project in 2014), which requires organizational skill.
Moreover, I always deliver what is promised and never fall short. I know how to utilize resources, collaborate, and resolve intellectual conflict with others for the best outcome.
I believe these are important traits to demonstrate that I am a qualified candidate for consideration into the Ph.D. program.
