Michigan, like other states, has wrestled with affirmative action policies. But when a white student was wait-listed at the University of Michigan in 1995, she led the campaign to amend the State Constitution.
In 2006, the voters of Michigan banned the consideration of race and gender in public university admissions and government hiring, effectively striking down affirmative action policies in that state. In 2011, a federal appeals court overturned the voter-approved ban, saying that it “unconstitutionally alters Michigan’s political structure by impermissibly burdening racial minorities.”
For this Discussion, develop an argument based upon your assigned viewpoint—either in favor of the 2006 decision or in favor of the 2011 reversal of that decision.
