Overview
The ability to sustain attention during an activity steadily increases throughout childhood and adolescence. This is due partly to children being able to manipulate more information in their working memory, and their increased ability to ignore distracting stimuli. Strutt, Anderson, and Well (1975) conducted a developmental study of the effects of irrelevant information on speeded classification. This activity is designed to replicate their findings.

Instructions
How to proceed
Use the Attention and Distraction Handout to conduct an experiment on Attention/Distraction.
Write a paper from information and data gathered from the experiment. This paper should include the following:
Briefly describe the characteristics of the participants (e.g., age, gender, grade level).
Provide the details of the participants’ performance (e.g., speed, accuracy, possible difficulties, anomalies, etc.).
Incorporating information-processing theory, explain why the younger individual took longer to sort the cards than the older individual. If your finding was different, explore the possible reasons.
