Classmates and instructor,
The impact of a leader on people and organizations is inextricably connected to the way they view themselves. How does a leader’s self-perception influence the way they impact others either positively or negatively?
One’s self-concept is one’s perception of who you are and what you can handle, affecting all aspects of one’s life and career (Fouché, 2004). Leaders’ self-concept can impact others because of the leaders’ power and ability to change others’ points of view to meet with his. Without self-concept, it becomes difficult to define skill, organizations flounder, and individuals lack direction.
A positive self-concept means leaders have a strong sense of identity and believe they’re capable of whatever challenges come. And they think they make valuable contributions to organizations with the knowledge, talent, and likely essential for success.
A negative self-concept means leaders are not compatible with their work and are pessimistic about their potential. Leaders maybe hate what they do and may believe they lack the knowledge, training, and experience to proceed with better events.
In what ways has the material in this course prepared you to be more aware of and vigilant toward the ways leaders can influence human behavior?
I learned that a leader needs to have strong EI, good social skills, charisma, and with solid and positive self-concept. One can learn and develop to obtain outstanding leadership. I knew that power and influence in leadership are critical. However, to influence, leaders need to create serializable environments with their employees (or followers). Employee engagement is relevant for employees, managers, leaders, and overall organizational performance. Leaders can use their influence, persuasion, and storytelling to increase employee engagement.
What key insights will you carry forward from this course to apply as an informed follower and an informed leader?
The key insights that I can carry forward from this course are that following leadership blindly is dangerous as an informed follower. Instead, as informed leaders, I should trust my employees’ ability, open resources and information to all my employees, and provide more autonomy to allow my employees to make some decisions within the company approve guideline.

Good morning classmates and professor,
(1) A leader’s self-perception can influence the direction the organization and its members take. The Emotional Intelligence Appraisal test by TalentSmart listed Self-Awareness as a crucial component of one’s EI.
The HBR article The Power to See Ourselves states that, “As a matter of cold, hard, psychological fact, a change in behavior on the job, for better or worse, means a change in self-concept”
(Brouwer, 1964). The leadership style that followers may be subjected to may vary depending on the leader’s self-perception.
(2) The course material has showed me what leadership skills I need to improve on for the career field of my choice, which is to commission into the U.S. Air Force after graduation. A career field like that would require networking and social skills as well as a strong emotional intelligence.
(3) The first key insight is to not exhibit blind loyalty toward leaders in an organization. Rather, I must remain true to my personal beliefs and values as well as those of the overall organization. The second key insight is to bridge the gap between the leader and the follower. Only when the two parties interact like colleagues rather than boss and employee can their relationship thrive. The final key insight from this course is to moderate my charisma. Too much charisma and too little can both be detrimental to the organization.
