Pick one children’s book (preferably one that is also a picturebook). (You can select two picturebook for this assignment, if you would prefer to do so). Consider the overall presentation of the book. Would you describe the story as being “well written”? Describe the length of the book. What is the plot of the story? Who are the characters and are they identifiable and realistic? Describe the use of text, the size of the book and pages, the colors, the tone of the book, shapes, artistic media (are illustrations presented as cartoons are are they realistic, are illustrations painted (in oil, watercolors, other?), are illustrations presented as collages, photos, mixed media, computer-generated, or other format?), and the overall message or moral of the story. Feel free to share other thoughts on the text and any questions that arose as you read and analyzed the text.

First, select a poem to read. Read it silently at least once. Then, read it aloud. You can read the poem aloud to yourself, or you can read it aloud to a friend or family member at home, or you can read read a poem over the phone or FaceTime or Zoom — the possibilities are nearly endless! Once you have completed your read-aloud of the poetry, please answer reflect on your experience and answer the following questions in a response of at least 150 words. (You are welcome to share further information and thoughts, beyond the scope of what the questions ask.) Then respond thoughtfully to the posts of at least two of your classmates.
What poem did you select? What is the title of the poem and who was the author? How did you select this poem? Who is the intended audience for this poem (and consider that an intended audience can be a specific group, such as children ages 3-5, or an intended audience can be all readers of any age)? What was the ‘story’ being told in the poem? Was there a message or moral behind the poem? How would you describe the tone and subject matter of this poem? Did the poem contain rhyming words? Was this a serious poem or a ‘nonsense’ poem? Was the poem in an identifiable format (such as a haiku, a shaped or concrete poem, rhymed format, free verse, a sonnet)? Describe the detail/imagery of the poem. Was there alliteration (repeated sounds), onomatopoeia (words that represent real sounds), similes and metaphors, and personification (giving human characteristics to inanimate items)? Do you feel this poem provided insight (some unique way of expressing a feeling or idea, sometimes in a surprising way) and if so, what insight or insights did it provide? Describe your experience reading the poem out loud. Did you find you were emphasizing certain words or lines, and if so, why? Did you alter the volume or tone of your voice at any time while you read, and if so, why?
