1. Kelly Arrington Importance of the use of theory in clinical practice
The use of theory is a constant part of clinical practice, even when it’s not obvious. Most interventions are rooted in theory and used because they’ve been shown to be effective. Using theory encourages reflection so we can come to an understanding of what works (Hothersall, 2016). Base theories are used to help “describe and predict human behaviour and assess the need for intervention” to give us an idea of where to begin our work (Gordon & Mackay, 2016, p. 69).
How theory relates to mothers
Since theories are used so extensively in clinical practice it is likely that they would relate to almost any topic area. Since I want to work with mothers, theories can help inform effective interventions for issues like postpartum depression and anxiety. The theories can give an idea of what works best for specific issues. Some issues facing mothers are more macro, like the lack of adequate childcare and maternity leave, and systems theory and other theories that consider the effect of the environment on the individual could be useful. These theories can be used to take a broader look at the mother in her environment and see which level is causing the most struggle.

Describe the schism that developed between Jane Addams and Mary Richmond with respect to an understanding of the social work profession through policy advocacy and action. Jane Addams believed that social condition was the cause of poverty and welfare concerns being an advocate for social action (Studypool Inc, 2022). Addams worked on changing policies by improving social conditions that have been affecting different populations. On the other hand, Mary Richmond believed the people were responsible for their situation and rehabilitation would help with their individual needs (2022). Jane worked more on the macro level and Mary worked more on the micro and mezzo level. They both worked to help people and the community but at different levels (2022).
Describe similar schisms that exist in contemporary social work. A schism that exists in contemporary social work is the division of micro, mezzo, and macro levels. There are social workers that are not interested in working in a macro level and stick to the micro and mezzo level. Very few are known to work in the macro level which we do need social workers in the macro level in order to continue improving social conditions. Jansson (2018) states how other politicians (nonsocial workers) can make a decision that would affect the people even more unless there were social workers taking their place that have more knowledge about what the communities and the people need. It would be great if policies were changed by social workers to address social conditions, but I have never taken an interest in macro. There is a need of social workers in all levels in this time and they are mostly focusing on helping the client in a micro and mezzo level.
Explain how the contemporary schisms prevent social workers from fulfilling their ethical obligation(s). NASW’s code of ethic shares how social workers are to help individuals concerns but also the social injustice at the same time (2022). Social works have just been providing therapy and other micro/mezzo services, but not wanting or taking an interest in trying to change policy to improve social conditions. On the other hand, NASW also shares how social workers should continue to grow within their area of competence (2022). Contemporary schism prevents social workers form fulling their ethical obligation maybe because a lot of the social’s workers are overloaded in their cases and there no room to think about working in a macro level. There are a lot social workers needed to help individuals and I think that is the most important area that social workers are trying to focus on to bring down the caseloads. There’s also a need for social workers in a macro level and maybe social workers do not have enough education about becoming an advocate or it is time consuming that some people want to stick with micro/mezzo levels.

Describe the schism that developed between Jane Addams and Mary Richmond with respect to an understanding of the social work profession through policy advocacy and action. Since the early days of the profession, social workers have viewed their role and mission in a variety of ways. For instance, some social workers like Jane Addams view the role of a social worker as best actualized when advocating for social reforms such as housing regulations, stronger policies that protect workers, and programs that aid those in need (Jansson, 2018, p. 28). On the other hand, other social workers like Mary Richmond have viewed rehabilitating the individual as the most appropriate intervention (Montalvo, 1982, p. 104). While Addams’approach places a greater emphasis on systemic issues, Richmond’s approach may be perceived as emphasizing the idea that an individual’s challenges stem from their own choices and circumstances.
Describe similar schisms that exist in contemporary social work. Similar to the schism between the perspectives held by Addams and Richmond, social workers are divided today when it comes to the place of macro-level practice in the profession (Hill, 2010, p. 514). While the profession’s history is rooted in progress made through macro-level practice, social workers may argue against the efficacy of macro-level practice, feeling that it fails to produce adequate change in the circumstances faced by their clients (Hill, 2010, p. 514). As a result, social workers are far more likely to be engaged in micro-level practice, providing interventions such as counseling and linking clients to available resources.
Explain how the contemporary schisms prevent social workers from fulfilling their ethical obligation(s). While the reluctance of society to change for the improvement of life for all people may make macro-level practice difficult, this form of practice is challenged further when social workers are divided on the issue. By failing to produce a united front, social workers negatively impact their ability to advocate for the positive changes which would significantly aid their clients and those in similar circumstances. While micro-level practice addresses immediate needs of individuals, this form of practice may be viewed as producing a similar result as what one would expect when placing a bandage on a wound.

Characteristics of Evidenced-Based Practice
Evidenced-based practice is an essential component of social work practice. Distinguishing characteristics of EBP is essential when working with vulnerable populations. EBP is necessary when providing clinical treatment to vulnerable populations (Whittaker, 2009, p. 167). For example, when working with high-risk children, providing EBP to the family assists with treatment and implementing these practices in the home setting. Often it is easier to explain modalities through EBP to provide the family with support and evidence of the modality used. In doing so, parents will understand and see the effects of the EBP. Through experience, parents respond best to EBP that supports interventions implemented in their child’s treatment services. The information is presented and explained, allowing the parent to see the positive effects and outcomes of the intervention implemented in all domains. Supporting Factors
Implementing EBP can determine the difference between “efficiency” and “effectiveness” (Whittaker, 2009, p. 168). To implement EBP, first, the target population must be identified. For instance, I work with at-risk youth, so EBP for this population should be researched and evaluated. In determining the target population, specifics help narrow the search for appropriate and effective EBP. For a program to be successful evidence-based programs should be implemented for positive and effective outcomes. For example, the Intensive In-Home (IIH) program I am the case manager for implements Seeking Safety, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (DBT). When these modalities are implemented in sessions and the home, children, and families can function and behaviors are managed. National Association of Social workers (n.d.) discusses the importance of randomized controlled trials are the most valuable interventions. Implementing EBP can determine the difference between “efficiency” and “effectiveness” (Whittaker, 2009, p. 168). The efficiency will determine the success of achieving the desired result. The effectiveness is the degree to which something is successful. To achieve both goals, one will have to select the appropriate EBP to engage with the client. Just as you have mentioned, the population that you serve is at-risk youth. I concur that the research is important when providing the appropriate EBP to achieve the goal for the client. Some examples of EBP are Acceptance and commitment therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy. The presented examples can lead to the engagement having structure. The structure will allow the client to achieve their goals. Our definitions of EBP are similar. Some may differ in using EBP. The reason is that EBP fails to consider cultural competence.
