Assignment 5 Essay
Тask Rationale
Essays are very common on degree courses as a means of testing students’ understanding and response to a topic. Essays can be long or short and their structure will depend on the question being addressed. The essay on this pre-sessional course is argumentative, where you develop an argument in response to a question, using a critical discussion of academic sources (Nesi and Gardner, 2006).
The purpose of this task is to show your understanding of the research process in how you discuss your research question through sections and/or paragraphs and integration of sources to form a logical argument.
The body of your essay should be organised around themes (rather than discussing the sources one by one). You should discuss sources critically and use them to support your own stance. Your essay should have a title.
Use your plan and the feedback you received on it to write your essay. Look carefully at the assessment criteria before you start.
When you submit your work, include a signed Cover Page (Declaration of Student Authorship) and follow the advice in the formatting instructions/criteria on font size, spacing etc.
All sources must be published in English.
Assignment 4 Essay plan

Task Instructions
The purpose of this task is to develop your essay structure, and so a logical argument to answer your question.
Number your sections/paragraphs and explain the key points of each, including in-text references. Your introduction and conclusion should be written in full; the body section should be in note form. Write your research question as the title.
Introduction 150-200 words Outline your research framework in the introduction (concept, context, problem, research question), give a rationale for why the question is important, a clear thesis/purpose statement. Use in-text references.
Body sections/paragraphs: these should be organised around themes or components, so that you integrate sources. Make it clear how each body paragraph relates back to the thesis/purpose.
Conclusion 150 words This should include a re-statement of your thesis/purpose, a summary of arguments made, a reflection on the effectiveness of these arguments.
All sources must be published in English.
