Purpose. It’s what everyone is searching for in life. Sometimes it takes years for people to find how they are meant to better the world and shape the future. My purpose is to help others overcome their insecurities and inadequacies through dental healthcare. My drive to instill cosmetic appearance stems from an interaction during a week-long service learning trip in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. We were nearing the final few patients when a young woman so ashamed of her own smile requested everyone except the oral surgeon to leave the room. I later learned that she asked for all of her front teeth to be removed because of the massive decay. At the time I didn’t understand how someone as young as me would want to get multiple of their front teeth removed, but after talking with Dr. Bruno I realized that she was only doing what was the norm. Most I will work in underserved communities to help restore and instill confidence in cosmetic appearance while emphasizing the importance of dental hygiene and healthy eating habits.
I have been working towards being a dentist since I was introduced to the field as a high school senior while participating in a pre-professional health internship. My time in undergrad was spent diligently working towards maintaining a 3.4 GPA and preparing for matriculation to dental school where I was involved in organizations like the Undergraduate Student National Dental Association (USNDA). My passion for dentistry was solidified during a week-long trip to Ocho Rios, Jamaica with the Jamaica Awareness Association of California (JAAC). Under the direction of Oral Surgeon, Dr. Bruno, I assisted in providing dental care to many residents who lacked access to oral healthcare. Many of my patient interactions revealed to me thatme, that individuals who had more severe dental needs, also maintained poor eating habits. It was imperative to not only provide patients with oral care, but also give suggestions on proper dental hygiene at home and healthier food options.
Volunteering with organizations like JAAC, has taught me that pursuing a healthcare profession demands leadership. I work to be a leader in and beyond my community to advocate for proper oral health and better eating habits. As an African American woman, I empathize with the underserved because I am a part of the community. It is important for me to invest in my community and in other communities to create ways to improve them. My goal as a dentist is to bridge the gap between underserved communities and dental care through raising consciousness of proper oral healthcare. If I am granted the opportunity of acceptance to your esteemed program, I will be a step closer to achieving my ambitions of becoming a dentist. I am aware that dental school entails immense preparation and I believe this curriculum will help further develop my academic skills.
There is no doubt that hard work and dedication are required to be successful in the field of dentistry. As an aspiring dentist, I am devoted to lifelong learning to work towards my goal; this serves as my reason for applying to dental school. It is my dream to improve the world through dentalcare and I desire to be amongst the astute participants of the MHS program in hopes to strengthen academic competence for dental school. I pledge to make people in underserved communities passionate about their dental hygiene. That’s how I will fulfill my purpose, one smile at a time.
