One goal of your research plan is to build a strong working bibliography. Carrying out systematic research and keeping careful notes on your sources will make developing your works-cited list or bibliography easier… The process of research, of consulting a number of credible sources, pushes you to learn more about your hypothesis and make it more precise.

Andrea Lunsford, The Everyday Writer (135)

After reading The Everyday Writer (135-136), create a working bibliography of sources (both scholarly and popular) related to your chosen topic. For scholarly sources, be sure to check the University of South Carolina library databases, such as Academic Search Complete, but also use Google Scholar to ensure that your sources have been widely cited by other experts. Popular sources can be found on databases like Nexis Uni and others. See here for a list of all databases UofSC subscribes to. Search widely and find as many things as you can. You must find at least three reputable scholarly sources (such as academic journal articles or book chapters) as well as three credible popular sources (such as magazine articles, newspaper articles, or online articles linked to reliable organizations) related to your chosen topic.

After completing this initial research, write a short 200- to 300-word reflection that describes your research process by explaining the following: What databases did you use? How did you find these sources? What keyword searches did you use? What library database did you use to find your popular sources? How did you decide which seemed most relevant and applicable? Do the sources help to reinforce the ideas you went into the project with, as you outlined in your Statement of Research Purpose, or have you yet noticed that your understanding of the topic has begun to shift in some way?

At the end of your short reflective essay, include a bibliography that lists each source you decided to keep (for now), using proper MLA style citation. (See “MLA Style for a List of Works Cited,” EW 471-479).

This assignment will help you begin to collect possible sources to use in your Research Essay. As you continue to research your topic, you will continue to add to your Working Bibliography. Keep track of all your sources, even those you don’t use, because at the end of the semester you’ll turn in a full bibliography of all sources you consulted.
