The current literature also shows a need to examine self-instructional training packages for ABA further. Al-Nasser et al. (2018) conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of self-instruction training on participant fidelity across multiple ABA procedures. The researchers recommended that further exploration of self-instruction-based teaching may be needed to promote its adoption by ABA practitioners. ABA and DTT are very close to each other. Some people use these two terms interchangeably though it is wrong. When referring to the ABA, practitioners often describe DTT (Elder, 2018). Numerous studies cover the topics of both ABA and DTT. Hence, in the case of a lacking body of literature on the specifics of DTT in answering both RQs, it makes sense to consider scholarly articles about ABA/DTT while looking for answers to the RQs.
Mangrum, R.D. (2019) investigated the effectiveness of a self-instructional training package, and the researcher recommended a need to evaluate the effectiveness of speed and accuracy of implementing therapy.
Marano et al. (2020) conducted a systematic review of 54 articles (containing 58 experiments) to examine the effectiveness of self-instructional training strategies. The findings showed that the self-instructional training methods led to mastery-level performance for various skills. The researchers recommended that future studies evaluate self-instructional training techniques with a broader range of skills, examine individual training components, and compare self-instructional training strategies.
Daniel et al. (2020) conducted a quantitative post-test pre-test study to examine the effectiveness of a self-instructional training package in increasing the accuracy with which ABA service providers would implement an assessment tool. The findings showed that self-instructional training increased the participants’ accuracy in implementing the tool. However, the study had several limitations. First, some participants had previously been exposed to the training, which affected their baseline scores. Second, while the participants demonstrated high accuracy, the generalization assessment was conducted about two months after the post-test, which means that they may have been exposed to the tool in the interim. Future studies should address these limitations.
In light of the recommendations of previous studies and the gap in the literature on self-instructional training methods, the present study aims to examine the impact of self-instructional training on the implementation of DTT.
