How populations consume resources matters, given that everyone lives within a single, common planet ecosystem defined by finite and renewable resources. In many ways, humanity’s collective health and well-being is determined by the decisions—and the manifestation of polices based on those decisions—for how communities acquire, consume, and post-process both necessary and desired resources. Paying attention to the consumption and lifecycle of resources can reveal opportunities for innovation and social change that promote individual and collective health, in addition to furthering progress toward the achievement of the respective SDGs.
An investigation of policies related to SDG 3, Good Health and Well-Being and SDG 12, Responsible Consumption and Production can help reveal the intersection of the SDGs and the related impacts. What policies already exist to regulate or reinvent consumption habits, and how does the policy content promote good health? Furthermore, as a social worker, how can you provide unique insights to help inspire change to existing policy, maximizing their direct, intended impacts, and minimizing indirect, adverse impacts (for example, you might draw on past experiences and knowledge of other SDGs to propose innovative policy alternatives).
For this Assignment, you search for, select, and provide a review of policies related to the recent SDGs you studied, including:
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being
SDG 4: Responsible Consumption and Production
SDG 13: Climate Action
By reviewing policies specific to the context of the SDGs, in addition to your weekly Discussions that focus on how SDGs and policy impact nonprofit organizations, you will highlight the relationships between global, interdisciplinary social ecological issues and micro, mezzo, and macro social work practice implications.
To Prepare:
Click on the United Nations website in the Learning Resources this week and revisit the SDGs from Week 3 and Week 4:
Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being
Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
Goal 13: Climate Action
Review the article by Nilsson and Jorgenson in the Learning Resources this week. Consider how the article relates to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being.
Review the remaining Learning Resources this week.
For at least 2 of the above SDGs, identify a public policy pursuing change or innovations in this area (e.g., Clean water). You can select one policy per SDG, or you can cover multiple SDGs within the same policy if the policy addresses more than one SDG.
By Day 7
Submit a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:
For each policy you identified:
Provide an overview of the selected policy, including:
Problem definition
Goals
Strategies/instruments to achieve goals.
Explain why the work is important at the micro, mezzo, and/or macro levels. In your explanation, describe how the refugee crisis explored in the article by Nilsson and Jorgenson could be influenced by one or more of your policy selections.
This is an opportunity to challenge yourself to explore the interconnections of the SDGs through a common context (in this case, the refugee crisis).
Describe at least one innovation from which the policy could benefit—or, if the policy is pursuing innovation, describe the innovation and its potential strengths and shortcomings.
Explain how this is important to the field of social work.
