This week, we’ve learned about Bivariate and Multivariate correlations. In Chapter 8, the book discussed internal validity and the three causal criteria. For each example below, discuss the three criteria before making a final decision of whether you believe the relationship is causal. If you conclude the the relationship is not causal, what are some other potential third variables that might explain the relationship? Remember to answer in paragraph format and explain your thinking! I’ve included a descriiption of the three criteria to refresh your memory:
Covariance: The results must show a correlation, or association, between the cause variable and the effect variable.
Temporal Precedence: The method must ensure that the cause variable preceded the effect variable; it must come first in time.
Internal Valididty: There must be no plausible alternative explanations for the relationship between the two variables.
1.”Extra screen time brings down school grades.”
2.”Giving kids sips of beer turns them into teenage drunks.”
3.”Getting a higher education leads to higher spending.”
4.”Higher temperatures lead to increased ice cream sales.”
