In 2016, some researchers in the Kishony Lab at Harvard, built a massive rectangular petri dish the size of a table (usually these are round and about the size of your palm, and we will use many of them in lab this semester) with different amounts of the antibiotic trimethoprim in different sections of the plate. Here is a video of them describing their work on the MegaPlate:

We’ll watch this video and, as a group, discuss, the causes and results of antibiotic resistance, and how this experiment works, and what it taught us about antibiotic resistance in bacteria. If you want to read the paper (not required, but might be interesting), use this link for the .pdf. This assignment will require you to apply your knowledge of evolution, antibiotics, and cell structure to a real-world situation.
