Universal and Timeless themes have been a primary focus of our literature study in this section of English 102. What makes literature, literature? Using Shel Silverstein’s “Where the Sidewalk Ends,” please determine the poem’s theme or theme(s). Then, select at least 2 elements of poetry (word choice, word order, tone/mood, sound, imagery, voice, rhyme, speaker) and develop an argument as to how these poetic elements work together to drive the theme of the work. Please refer to quotes or partial quotes from the text as you develop your work. AT LEAST FOUR Direct quotes should be integrated into your argument.
Your goal is to demonstrate how the poet uses poetic elements and devices to create the overall effects that produce the theme or themes which you have determined. There is no RIGHT OR WRONG-argue your position.
SOME POINTERS:
1. This paper will focus on only one poem and not a combination of poems.
2. No secondary sources are needed. This paper should represent the writer’s own independent critical thinking. Please DO NOT USE ANY SECONDARY SOURCES! DO NOT SEEK OUT HELP FROM ANY STUDY SITE !
3. Use present tense when describing the events of the poem. (ex: the poet writes, the speaker states, etc). Avoid pronouns. Take an academic voice to your task.
4. When writing about a poem, it is standard to include the line number[s] at the end of a quoted passage in parentheses.
(For example: For instance, the speaker says, “I’m stone. I’m flesh,” (5).)
5. Refer to the speaker within the poem as “the speaker” rather than by the name of the poet since the poet is most often using a persona (just as a story writer uses a narrator) to express a position.
6. No works cited page is necessary. Remember to identify the poem and author in your introduction.
