your paper will be a response to ONE of the questions provided, with your answer serving as your thesis statement.
1. The Meiji Restoration did not occur in isolation and was very much influenced by the geopolitical situation in Asia and the rest of the world in the nineteenth century. What was the main concern that motivated Japan’s leaders to push for modernization and westernization? Give one specific answer and argue with evidence from multiple primary sources. HINT: You want to draw evidence from the Meiji period proper (1868-1912) as well as its prelude. Think of how developments in Japan during Meiji reflected the circumstances that kickstarted the era.
2. The Meiji Era (1868-1912) saw an unprecedented level of interaction between Japan and the West. How did the relationship between Japan and the Western powers (the United States and those in Europe) change during the Meiji period? Identify one focused answer and argue with evidence from multiple primary sources. HINT: All the sources deal with this relationship to some extent. How do the later sources differ from the earlier ones?
